Serie A round 25 preview
Atalanta – Sampdoria
Atalanta will be looking to re-ignite their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Cup following another disappointing result at the weekend; a 2-2 home draw with Siena. The Nerazzurri are still well positioned in ninth, however they really need to get back on the winning trail. Sampdoria continued their brilliant form of 2008 with a 1-1 draw at home to Inter on Sunday, a game they perhaps could have taken all three points from. The Blucerchiati have now lost just one in seven, and are just six points off the Champions League places.
Tip: Under2.5
Catania – Milan
Catania are in freefall after yet another loss; 2-0 at Fiorentina. Having been comfortable for most of the season the Sicilians are down to 15th, just one point above the relegation zone. Milan are back in the Champions League places after Filippo Inzaghi’s injury time goal handed them a crucial 2-1 win over Palermo. The Rossoneri have look tired recently though, and Carlo Ancelotti may choose to shuffle his pack with the big Champions League return game with Arsenal coming up next week.
Tip: Under 2.5
Fiorentina – Livorno
Fiorentina received a blow on Sunday afternoon as they fell to a slightly unfortunate 1-0 defeat at Roma. This result allowed Milan to catch them in fourth place, and so a victory is a must for Cesare Prandelli’s men in this one. Livorno are back in the relegation dogfight as their 2-1 home defeat to Napoli means they have now lost four of their last six matches, drawing the other two. The Tuscans are down to 16th in the table, just one point above the bottom three.
Tip: 1
Genoa- Napoli
Genoa were involved in an incredible match at the weekend as they won 5-3 at Udinese, with Marco Boriello scoring a brilliant hat-trick. The Rossoblu have been in fine form of late, with five wins, a draw, and two defeats from their last eight games. Napoli picked up a much-needed win at Livorno, courtesy of an injury-time goal from Emanuele Calaio. The Partenopei had won just one of their last seven matches in Serie A before that game in Tuscany. They are currently in 11th position.
Tip 1x or Over 2.5
Inter – Roma
The game of the day comes from San Siro. Anything less than a win for Roma will surely wrap up another Scudetto victory for Inter. The Nerazzurri are nine points clear of the Giallorossi, a lead that was cut following a 1-1 draw with Sampdoria on Sunday afternoon. Roma meanwhile grinded out a 1-0 win over Fiorentina, and will surely be going all-out for the three points. Inter’s preparations have been hit by talk of dressing room unrest, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marco Materazzi reportedly not speaking to each other.
Tip: Over 2.5
Juventus - Torino
The Turin derby could be a potentially explosive affair given the controversial events leading up to the match. The Bianconeri’s defeat at Reggina at the weekend in which they were denied two clear-cut penalties saw them write an open letter to the FIGC complaining about the constant refereeing mistakes against the club. Torino meanwhile were also involved in a much-talked about game, as they recovered from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 with Parma. That result was incredibly the Granata’s 14th draw of the campaign, and sees them move up to 12th place alongside Lazio.
Tip : Under2.5
Lazio – Reggina
The problems at Lazio continue as they fell to a hugely disappointing 1-0 defeat at bottom-of-the-league Cagliari. The Biancocelesti are in 13th position, and will be looking nervously over their shoulders as they are just four points above the drop zone. Reggina picked up a stunning win on Saturday night, as Nicola Amoruso’s injury-time penalty saw them defeat Juventus 2-1. However the game was not without controversy as anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock will know. The Calabrians are still second from bottom in the league, but they are now just one point away from safety.
Tip 1 or 1H(0-1)
Palermo – Empoli
Palermo were extremely unlucky on Sunday night as they were just seconds away from earning a well-deserved point at Milan, until Pippo Inzaghi struck in injury time. The Sicilians have slipped two places to tenth following that loss, and will need to get back to winning ways if they want to move back into the UEFA Cup reckoning. Empoli are on a wonderful run, as their 2-0 win over Catania was their third victory on the spin. The Azzurri had been looking like real relegation candidates but they have now given themselves three points breathing space from the bottom three.
Tip Over2.5 or 1
Parma – Udinese
Parma will be kicking themselves as they spurned the chance to move out of the relegation zone by surrendering a 4-1 lead at Torino, eventually drawing 4-4. The Gialloblu have now gone on an alarming run of eight matches without a win. Udinese’s form has also not been too clever of late, with just one win and a draw from their last six in Serie A. Despite this they are still in sixth position, and are only in fact five points off the fourth and final Champions League spot.
Tip 1 or 1x
Siena – Cagliari
Siena surrendered a two-goal lead at Atalanta, a result that means they stay level on points with Parma in the final relegation position. The Tuscans performances in 2008 have been good so far, including a superb 3-0 win over Roma a few weeks back. Bottom-of-the-league Cagliari know that this match at the Stadio Franchi will be crucial if they are to continue their recovery. The Sardinians had looked dead-and-buried, however two wins and two draws from their last five games, including a 1-0 victory over Lazio on Sunday, has given them hope of survival.
