Arsenal - Sheffield United : Carling Cup

Arsenal's Academy

Wenger's youth team are again expected to be put to the sword as he uses this tournament as a bleeding ground and a potential promotion route to the first team. The 58-year old Frenchman told Arsenal TV Online: "There is a possibility it will be the youngest side ever... In the first team there are many players around 20. In the Carling Cup we will keep a few in there, but the side will be more between 16 and 19.

At Arsenal you can say 20 and 21-year-olds are the experienced players.""You are likely to see Gavin Hoyte, Abu Ogogu, Aaron Ramsey, Mark Randall, Jack Wilshere (pictured), Fran Merida and Carlos Vela. Maybe Nicklas Bendtner will play.
Alex Song, Djourou and Lukasz Fabianski will be the experienced players.""But you will have players like Emmanuel Frimpong and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, so it will be a very young side."Arsenal are enjoying a fine run of form recently, having tallied an average of three goals per game in their last five outings and conceding only once.

However, only a small number of the players featuring on Tuesday evening will have kitted out for the first team in that time.In the last reserves match where at least five of the expected starters were fielded, against Portsmouth reserves on September 16, Hoyte; Gibbs; Lansbury; Merida; and Randall, helped the second string to a 1-0 victory.Lansbury and Ramsey have both been impressing on international duty with the England and Wales U19 international teams while hotly-rated teenager Jack Wilshere lit up the Arsenal youth and reserve team last season, and had a commendable pre-season with the full squad.

ArsenalPossible Starting XI: Fabianski - Gibbs, Song, Djourou, G Hoyte - Wilshere, Merida, Randall, Lansbury - Vela, Bendtner.

United Front

Sheffield United on the other hand are not enjoying the English Championship as much as they would like and are struggling to kick start their season. A win over Arsenal's famed multi-national academy could be just the tonic to push on in England's second tier.United do have players that hold Premier League experience - and therefore presumably have the upper hand over Arsenal's academy players, although proceedings hardly ever work by that notion.

Greg Halford is on loan from Sunderland, James Beattie has international experience, Gary Speed witnessed near enough two decades of top flight action, Gary Naysmith used to play for Everton, Sun Jihai used to grace the Manchester City pitches (but faces disciplinary action for his dismissal against Coventry City), and Lee Hendrie is a former Villan.

Possible Starting XI: Kenny - Naysmith, Morgan, Kilgannon, Halford - Montgomery, Cotterill, Speed, Quinn - Beattie, Sharp.

i think a surprise is possible here
